Yeah, remember that post I made about friends knowing your automotive weaknesses? This is another one. A little bird Dutchman *AHEM Jobjoris* tipped me off to this. Can’t trust those Dutch, always pushing unobtanium little cars on unsuspecting Yanks.

What am I supposed to do?

I thought that Ranchos are still relatively common, like a French Cherokee kind of thing but it seems that they're rarer than I expected.

Find RamblinRover immediately, this is a matter of utmost urgency. We have a plan. Sort of.

Cherokees are pillars of quality compared to these, from what I understand. They also have actual off-road chops, which this doesn’t. I aim to change that for one lucky Rancho someday.

850E?! Well, fuck me. The time for awful Frenchness may have actually arrived, sooner than we thought. I mean, I could actually go halvsies on that right meow - probably - I spent about $400 just on damn radiators last month. Should we ask duurtlang for a stow estimate and shipping workup?

Well the Rancho off roads about as well as a 240, I was more referring to the ‘rugged’ lifestyle of Cherokee owners. Also these were basically folded into shape by grouchy French people, so how much build quality are you honestly expecting? Anyways, you can have your Rancho, I’ll have a Bagheera myself.

At this price point, I could do the same, though I have no time for another project at the moment. I am genuinely curious about costs.

Funny, I just got myself one of those (the 2nd gen “S” model) in 1/43 as well! Watch Live And Let Diecast for that. I’d love one of those too, 3 seats so I can take my kids out for ice cream!

Looks like it’s way off in the boonies, but for that price... Maybe wait and watch for a week, tentatively get a duurtlang estimate? I mean, if it weren’t so far into France and he weren’t into the north country, I’d see what 4muddyfeet felt like his lulz budget was. Could try BiTurbo, maybe.

Jobjoris noted it’s in the sticks, but he could get it to Rotterdam. I already send him money for model cars, why not a real one? Fuck.

Kinja'd!!!0

Duly noted. How much would we have to supplement his lulz budget, and does he have duurtlang staging space? 800 miles away is too far even for our mad friend Simon (BiTurbo), I suspect, even though anyone with a Lada Niva and a Cit BX would obviously be on board with this all the way if he could be.

Do it!! I’m sure some of us EurOppos would want to pick it up for you, I certainly would but my Twingo can’t tow. Maybe picking it up could even become part of an Oppo Roadtrip for some of the EurOppos! I think duurtlang already has experience with shipping cars to America, so it probably can’t hurt to contact him if it gets serious.

I’ll discuss this with Fritch and see what we come up with. It’s just the right sort of crazy idea to come off. :) I like how in the first picture there looks to be a 2CV wheel in the background.

Kinja'd!!! Jobjoris > RamblinRover Luxury-Yacht
06/24/2016 at 17:34

The 2CV wheel was very easily available over here. And ended up on all kinds of home made trailers. Yep, that’s a small trailer. Gotta love Europe...

That would be pretty cool. Duurtlang’s name has come up already, believe me! As if we need more nefarious Dutch encouraging us here.

06/24/2016 at 17:48

Kinja'd!!!1

We(the Dutch/European Oppos) could always throw a Peugeot diesel in the back, so you can keep it more french, though the idea of the Maudi Quancho started growing on me. Lucky for you I don’t have space nor time for such a project :)

There were 2 Simcas? There were a lot of names involved with this car come to think of it. Chrysler, Renault, Talbot.

Kinja'd!!! RallyWrench > BvdV - The Dutch Engineer
06/24/2016 at 18:00

Kinja'd!!!1

Unlucky for me, you mean? Now I can’t just watch you do it from a safe distance, my time and bank account safe! I like keeping engine swaps in the family, but Pug parts don’t exactly grow on trees here and I already have a complete Audi 4000(80) and spare drivetrain, and a core VW TDI engine. So it makes perfect sense, you see (eye roll).

Kinja'd!!! RallyWrench > Jonee
06/24/2016 at 18:03

Kinja'd!!!0

When Chrysler sold its interest (which basically used to be Simca) to PSA, these and other things became Talbot-Matras and other combinations of the three. Such a weird circle that became.

You could see it that way too, I guess. Haha

Yeah, that makes perfect sense! Though my mind might be a bit compromised, since building a car from scratch within a year made perfect sense to me a few years ago.

Anyhow, my holiday has started, so I wouldn’t mind helping Jobjoris pick this cross-over avant la lettre up.

I don’t know where they’ll find that help in America, but definitely. I’d love to have a Rancho, though. And that 404. Certainly Hobgoblin height. And very styling. I wish it was as cheap as the Matra-Simca-Talbot.
